The mayor is usually the highest officer in the citys goverment, however, the definition of mayor institution varies quite a lot, depending about the country. In most of the countries the mayor is a chief executive officer of the city or sometimes just a ceremonial officer of different types of municipalities. The authority of the mayor is regulated by local laws and customs regarding the responsibilities of the mayor. Also the way the mayor is mandated varies in different countries.

In many countries the mayor is appointed by federal or regional goverment, however, some countries and cities prefer to let the people straight vote for their mayor in an election.
